Seattle City Hall wins 2007 ACEC Washington State Chapter Gold Award. Wood Harbinger received the American
Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) State Chapter’s 2007 Engineering Excellence Gold Award for the City of
Seattle’s new City Hall. ACEC recognized our innovative mechanical design for the 198,000 square foot
complex, which includes a seven-story Office Tower, a two-story Council Chambers Annex, and underground
parking. As part of the three block Seattle Civic Center, it serves as a focal point for public gatherings.
Wood Harbinger’s extensive energy modeling supported the City achieving an ideal balance between construction
and long-term operating costs. Our design focused on solutions that provide optimal comfort, energy efficiency,
and that extend City Hall’s useful life. For example, a raised floor ventilation system was used to improve
indoor air quality and reduce energy consumption, while supporting easier reconfiguration of indoor spaces
and introduction of new technologies.
Seattle City Hall includes a water reclamation system that collects rainwater for
toilet flushing and irrigation. The system reduces storm water runoff by 75% and potable water use by 30%.
