To serve its growing student population, The Evergreen State College sought a new building
that would demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and energy conservation.
Wood Harbinger's innovative design for the 5-building, 160,000 SF complex included:
-
Natural ventilation in all public spaces, offices, and classrooms;
-
Individual temperature control in each space for optimum occupant comfort;
-
Water saving features, such as waterless urinals and motion sensor faucets, to reduce indoor water use by 20%; and
-
Passive solar radiation to supplement the heating system.
These efficient approaches reduced the size requirements of the HVAC systems, reduced
capital costs, and enabled energy use to be 35% less than energy code requirements.
Seminar II received LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
