Combined Communications and Command Center

Sea-Tac International Airport - SeaTac, WA

The South Terminal Expansion project included a 30,000 SF Combined Communications and Command Center (C4) located in the basement of the terminal. The new C4 facility is comprised of co-located communications, command, and control facilities that replaced several standalone facilities previously located throughout the airport.

The C4 is contained within a concrete hardened area and is designed to survive and continue operation after a seismic event, even if the rest of the airport is inoperable.

The C4 area has 100% redundancy of both the mechanical and electrical systems. A NFPA Code 905 smoke control system with exhaust, pressurization, and purge modes is also provided. Outside air is provided to the HVAC system through a seismically hardened air shaft. Primary cooling is provided by chilled water from the central cooling plant. A separate, dedicated standby chiller is located in the mechanical room with a cooling tower located in a remote seismically hardened location.

A 1,000 kW standby generator dedicated to C4 is located in a remote generator room, which is also seismically hardened. This generator provides 100% backup for all C4 electrical and mechanical needs in case the airport electrical utility power is down. More Aviation Projects.
