The Port of Tacoma's expansion plans included redeveloping the Pierce
County Terminal into a major container terminal, with a container yard,
12-track intermodal yard, 7-track support yard, and corresponding
infrastructure and utilities.
Wood Harbinger provided the mechanical and electrical design and
construction administration for the compressed air system. The system provides:
-
Compressed air for brake testing to multiple locations on the 12-track intermodal yard, including nearly 3.5 miles of underground compressed air piping;
-
Pneumatic brake system service boxes in multiple locations for each of the 12 intermodal yard railway tracks;
-
A heated and ventilated compressor building; and
-
Electrical service to support the compressed air system.
The compressor building, air distribution system, and electrical distribution system were
designed to readily support future expansion of the intermodal rail yard.
